Thirteenth Sunday
In Ordinary Time
June 27, 2010
First
Elijah the prophet followed God’s instruction to appoint a man named Elisha as his successor. Elijah threw his cloak over Elisha, who went and said good-bye to his family, then followed Elijah without question.
Second
Paul reminds us that people were freed from the old law through Christ. But he makes it clear that his freedom does not mean giving in to evil desires. Instead, we must be guided by the spirit and most importantly love our neighbors as ourselves.
Gospel: Luke 9:51-62
Jesus set out to Jerusalem, and passes through a town where he was not welcomed. He reprimanded his disciples for desiring vengeance against the town. One man wanted to follow Jesus when he had finished his duties at home. Jesus expressed that a man who begins a task, but constantly looks back is unfit for the reign of God.

PRAY FOR PEACE
Prayer for Generosity
Dear Lord, teach me to be generous;
Teach me to serve you as you deserve;
To give and not to count the cost;
To fight and not to heed the wounds;
To toil and not to seek for rest;
To labor, and not to ask for any reward –
except that of knowing that I am doing your holy will.
AMEN.

Happily, the number of seminarians for the Diocese of Oakland has grown significantly in recent times. We now have 25 seminarians and 6 new applicants to join us this fall. The Diocese of Oakland Vocation Office is seeking the donation of a used automobile for seminarian use. The automobile should be in good working condition and fairly economical to operate. A receipt for the value of the vehicle will be provided as a tax deduction.
Please contact the Vocation Office at 510-267-8356 or email us at rkrausnick@oakdiocese.org. If you have a qualified used vehicle please contact us about donating it for this worthy cause. Thank you!

Ifs and buts
Think of how difficult a conversation would be without the words “if and but.” These small one-syllable words provide walls of protection and defense in our lives. We make plans and promises with these comfortable clauses, knowing that any failure to follow through has already been excused. I’ll be there if this or that doesn’t happen. I planned on helping out but …
Just like seekers in today’s Gospel, our “ifs and buts” betray the working of our hearts. Those seekers were ready to follow Jesus, if He agreed to let them put other concerns first. Jesus saw past the false “reasonableness” of their request to their hearts. He knew those who are truly willing to follow Him will open their lives and hearts without reservation. Let’s take a moment to pray for the strength to simply say “I will follow.” No clauses, expectations, ifs or buts. And we will find, as we travel the road with Him, He will provide all our other needs.
