      Fourteenth Sunday

              In Ordinary Time

           July 4, 2010

First Reading:  Isaiah 66:10-14c

Isaiah instructs the people of Jerusalem to rejoice, because God would restore her prosperity. The people will better understand God’s power through their homeland’s restoration.

Second Reading: Galatians 6:14-18

Paul describes the sign of the cross of Jesus as all that is significant. Following the old laws is unimportant. Instead, being baptized in Christ and adhering to his ideals is what matters most.

Gospel:  Luke 10:1-12.17-20

Jesus sent forth seventy-two disciples to preach his good news, telling them “the harvest is rich, but the workers few.” He also gave them detailed instructions on how to act towards the people. Jesus then reminded them not to be happy because of their power over evil, but to rejoice in the salvation they would achieve.

            PRAY FOR PEACE

Prayer for Generosity

Dear Lord, teach me to be generous;

Teach me to serve you as you deserve;

To give and not to count the cost;

To fight and not to heed the wounds;

To toil and not to seek for rest;

To labor, and not to ask for any reward –

except that of knowing that I am doing your holy will.

                                            AMEN.

CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY

LATIN AMERICA COLLECTION

JULY 18, 2010

Although approximately half of the world’s Catholic population lives in Latin America, the Church in the region is losing members at an alarming rate. They are drawn away from the Church by other faiths and are often obligated to migrate in pursuit of a better life. These tensions can contribute to the destabilization of families and faith communities. You can keep faith through your support of the upcoming collection on July 18, 2010. Your generosity will support pastoral work that engages parishioners and fosters the faith. The Church in Latin America needs your help.

Please be as generous as you can

on the weekend of July 18th

Prayer for the Nation

Almighty God, You have given us this land for our heritage. We humbly ask You that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of Your favor and glad to do Your will.

Bless our land with honorable endeavor, sound learning and pure manners. Save us from violence, discord and confusion, from pride and arrogance, and from every evil way. Defend our liberties and fashion into one united people the multitude brought here out to many nations and tongues. Endow with your Spirit of wisdom those to whom in Your name we entrust the authority of government, that there may be justice and peace at home, and that through obedience to your law we may show forth Your praise among the nations on earth. In time of prosperity fill our hearts with thankfulness, and in the day of trouble do not allow our trust in you to fail.

                                                      AMEN.
