While discussing everlasting life, a lawyer mentions loving one’s neighbor as oneself. The lawyer then asks Jesus, “Who is my neighbor?” Jesus tells him about a man beaten by robbers, who was ignored by both a priest and a Levite before a Samaritan stopped and offered him aid. Jesus asks the lawyer who was neighbor to the injured man. The lawyer says “the one who treated him with compassion.” Jesus encourages him to go and to do the same.

Although approximately half of the world’s Catholic population lives in Latin America, the Church in the region is losing members at an alarming rate. They are drawn away from the Church by other faiths and are often obligated to migrate in pursuit of a better life. These tensions can contribute to the destabilization of families and faith communities. You can keep faith through your support of the upcoming collection on July 18, 2010. Your generosity will support pastoral work that engages parishioners and fosters the faith. The Church in Latin America needs your help.
