Sixteenth Sunday

          In Ordinary Time

July 19, 2009

First Reading:  Jeremiah 23:1-6

In this passage, God denounces false leaders who have scattered his people. He promises that they will be reunited and led by one who is just and wise.

Second Reading:  Ephesians 2:13-18

Paul explains that through Jesus Christ, there is no longer hostility between Gentile and Jew. Instead, through the Spirit of Christ, both groups become one body and are equal in the eyes of God.

Gospel:  Mark 6:30-34

The apostles returned after their mission and told Jesus what they had done and taught. He told them to rest, but people kept coming to them. So they went to find a private place, but the people learned where they were going and arrived first. Jesus felt sorry for them and decided to teach them instead of resting.

        PRAY FOR PEACE

Prayer for Generosity

Dear Lord, teach me to be generous;

Teach me to serve you as you deserve;

To give and not to count the cost;

To fight and not to heed the wounds;

To toil and not to seek for rest;

To labor, and not to ask for any reward –

except that of knowing that I am doing your holy will.

                                                  AMEN.

ONE CHURCH ONE AMERICA

Collection for the Church in Latin America

A Special Collection for the Church in Latin America will be taken up this weekend July 18/19, 2009.

The collection for the Church in Latin America is an important way for the faithful in this country to express solidarity with their brothers and sisters to the south, because their pastoral and material needs are great.

Donations to the Collection fund projects throughout Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean that bring people more fully into the life of the Catholic Church.
