Twentieth Sunday

          In Ordinary Time

August 16, 2009

First Reading:  Proverbs 9:1-6

A rich woman invites many guests to her home to eat and drink. She appeals to those who lack understanding to forsake foolishness and “advance in the way of understanding.”

Second Reading:  Ephesians 5:15-20

Paul advises the Ephesians to abandon foolish ways and evil deeds. All Christians should concentrate on doing God’s will before all other things. He reminds them to always give thanks to God in the name of Jesus Christ.

Gospel:  John 6:51-58

Jesus had just told the crowd that anyone who ate of the bread he planned to give would live forever, and that this bread was his flesh, which he would give up for the sake of the world. The people do not understand, but Jesus reassures them that his flesh is real food and that “those who feed on this bread shall live forever.

         PRAY FOR PEACE

Prayer for Generosity

Dear Lord, teach me to be generous;

Teach me to serve you as you deserve;

To give and not to count the cost;

To fight and not to heed the wounds;

To toil and not to seek for rest;

To labor, and not to ask for any reward –

except that of knowing that I am doing your holy will.

                                                  AMEN.

Propagation of the Faith

Passionist Overseas Missions

August 22 & 23, 2009

The weekend of August 22nd and 23rd Stephen Deep, a Representative of Passionist Overseas Missions, will be speaking to us about the vital work being done by the Passionist Priests & Brothers serving in their Overseas Mission Territories.

Stephen’s visit to Our Lady of Lourdes is in conjunction with our participation in the Annual Mission Cooperative Program for the Diocese of Oakland.

Kindly welcome Stephen Deep and please give this important appeal your attention.

Young Family Ministry Forming

We are seeking to form a Young Family Ministry program at Our Lady of Lourdes. This ministry would be a small faith community to include a monthly gathering to help guide and grow faith formation as a family., address issues families of faith face, build community for support for each other, celebrate the diversity in our parish, possible baby sitting during Mass, creating a children’s bulletin and other things.

First we have to see if we have enough interest so please e-mail Lynn Landry. If we get a certain minimum number of families, we’ll set a date for our first gathering and go from there. If you email me, I promise to respond and will include my proposal for your input.

Email Lynn at mizlandry@me.com

SAYING GOOD-BYE IS NEVER EASY

There is a time to come and a time to go! This weekend August 15/16, 2009 our longtime Sacristan Bernie Mullins will bid us farewell.

Goodbyes are never easy.

Bernie has been a tremendous support to Our Lady of Lourdes Parish for many years.

We wish him all the best for his future, and again Thank You Bernie.  We all will miss you here very much at Our Lady of Lourdes Church.

May God bless you always.

All parishioners are invited to come to the parish hall after the 11 o’clock Mass for Hospitality and to say goodbye to Bernie.
