      Twenty-First Sunday

         In Ordinary Time

                      August 22, 2010

First Reading:  Isaiah 66:18-21

Isaiah portrays a time when people from many nations will gather in Jerusalem and proclaim God’s glory. God’s messengers will teach many nations about God. Just as the Israelites bring offerings; these messengers will bring people from all nations to worship.

Second Reading:  Hebrews 12:5-7. 11-13

The Hebrews are told that God disciplines those he loves. When a parent disciplines a child, the child usually learns what is expected of him. The Hebrews are encouraged to face life’s trials as a form of discipline and attempt to learn something from them.

Gospel:  Luke 13:22-30

Jesus warns that the door to God’s kingdom will be locked for those who ignored his wishes. Many people will come from all nations and take their place in God’s kingdom. Others will not be recognized by God, and he will reject them.

            PRAY FOR PEACE

Prayer for Generosity

Dear Lord, teach me to be generous;

Teach me to serve you as you deserve;

To give and not to count the cost;

To fight and not to heed the wounds;

To toil and not to seek for rest;

To labor, and not to ask for any reward –

except that of knowing that I am doing your holy will.

                                            AMEN.

Shepherds Field Olive Wood Handcrafts are coming again to Our Lady of Lourdes Church -  August 28/29, 2010.

A group from the Holy Land ( Bethlehem & Jerusalem) will be selling religious articles after the Masses on behalf of the Christian Catholic families in Bethlehem. These families work in small workshops to produce religious articles from olive wood that represent the Christian art of the Holy Land. They sell their products to pilgrims who visit the Holy Land but these days they face an economic hardship as there are few tourists who go there because of security issues. Many of them emigrated and left the Holy Land. The percentage of Christians in the Holy Land has dropped to less than 2%. If this hardship continues as it is now, we believe in a few years there will be no Christian people in Bethlehem or Jerusalem, where Jesus was born. Sales will be used to help and support the Catholics in the Holy Land and to encourage them not to immigrate.

May God be with you and may God richly bless his people now and forever.

DIOCESE OF OAKLAND

2010 MISSIONARY COOPERATIVE APPEAL

The Annual Mission Cooperative Appeal (Propagation of the Faith) will be next weekend August 28 – 29, 2010. Fr. Joseph Duong Phan from the Apostleship of the Sea will be visiting Our Lady of Lourdes Church.  Apostleship of the Sea is the Catholic ministry to seafarers. In the Diocese of Oakland the Apostleship of the Sea reaches out to international seafarers coming to the ports of Oakland and Richmond. The chaplain and volunteers respond to the seafarers’ needs when they spend a short time at the ports, such as visiting ships and celebrating the Holy Mass and other Sacraments on board ships. The Apostleship of the Sea also welcomes seafarers to the center for relaxing, counseling, and for connecting with their families via telephone and internet. The center also provides the transportation for them to make a quick trip to grocery stores or any shop that the seafarers need.

All these services are done with Christian charity and in the mandate of the Gospel: “When I was a stranger, you welcomed me” (Mt.25:35).

Your financial help will help us reach out to seafarers on aboard 3200 merchant vessels coming yearly to the ports in the Oakland Diocese

Fr. Joseph Duong Phan,

Director Chaplain, Apostleship of the Sea Oakland.

Worldwide Marriage Encounter

“I place much of my hope for the future in Marriage Encounter.” – Pope John-Paul II

“Marriage Encounter, Yes! You are doing such important work in our church, especially in this world we live in. I will pray for you and your movement.’ - Pope Benedict XVI

Married Couples: In Colossians 3:12-14, we learn that we have been chosen – “And so, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you. And, beyond all those things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity.” Join us for our next WWME weekend September 17 – 19 and be comforted by each others heart of compassion, kindness, humility, patience and love.
