Twenty-First Sunday

          In Ordinary Time

August 23, 2009

First Reading:  Joshua 24:1-2. 15-17.18

Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel and told them if it did not please them to serve God, then they must decide who they would serve. The people claimed that God had brought them out of slavery and protected them on their journey. Therefore, they would serve, the Lord their God, and no one else.

Second Reading:  Ephesians 5:21-32

Husbands and wives should love one another as Christ loved the Church. They should nourish and care for each other as Christ cared for the Church. Through the union between the two, they become one.

Gospel:  John 6:60-69

Many of Jesus’ followers were still disturbed by his teaching of the living bread, which they could not yet fully understand. Jesus explained that the Spirit gives life and flesh is unimportant. Some of the disciples decided to leave. Although they do not completely understand yet, they have enough faith in Jesus to stay because they believe he is God’s holy one.

         PRAY FOR PEACE

Prayer for Generosity

Dear Lord, teach me to be generous;

Teach me to serve you as you deserve;

To give and not to count the cost;

To fight and not to heed the wounds;

To toil and not to seek for rest;

To labor, and not to ask for any reward –

except that of knowing that I am doing your holy will.

                                                  AMEN.

Young Family Ministry Forming

We are seeking to form a Young Family Ministry program at Our Lady of Lourdes. This ministry would be a small faith community to include a monthly gathering to help guide and grow faith formation as a family, address issues families of faith face, build community for support for each other, celebrate the diversity in our parish, possible baby sitting during Mass, creating a children’s bulletin and other things.

First we have to see if we have enough interest so please e-mail Lynn Landry. If we get a certain minimum number of families, we’ll set a date for our first gathering and go from there. If you email me, I promise to respond and will include my proposal for your input.

Email Lynn at mizlandry@me.com

Propagation of the Faith

Passionist Overseas Missions

August 22 & 23, 2009

Today we welcome Mr. Stephen Deep, a representative of Passionist Overseas Missions at Our Lady of Lourdes Church.

Stephen’s Visit to our Parish is in conjunction with our participation in the Annual Cooperative Program for the Diocese of Oakland.

Passionist Missionaries have served in Mission Territories through the world for many years. Today Passionist Priest and Brothers are ministering to people in Haiti, the Caribbean, Africa, Jamaica, West Indies, Honduras and the Philippines.

Most Missions offer a Four-Fold Program of Education, Health, Economic Development and Community Organization to the people they serve. They work to break the cycle of poverty, illness and educational deprivation and substitute a willingness to learn and progress. You can assist them in the endeavors.

Kindly give your attention to Stephen’s important appeal and please be as generous as your circumstances allow.

ATTENTION LECTORS:

The new Lector Books for the year 2010 have arrived. Please pick up your copy at the parish office. (Office hours Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.)

Donations are $100.00 for the listing throughout the year of your name, or the name of one of your loved ones in remembrance.

If you own a business, or have a friend who owns a business, you may consider putting an ad in our Sunday bulletin. All you have to do is send us your business card and we will do the rest. It is that simple.
