      Twenty- Second Sunday

         In Ordinary Time

                      August 29, 2010

First Reading:  Sirach 3:17-18. 20.28-29

Those who are humble will find favor with God. Everyone should realize that there is much we can learn from each other. Even the most knowledgeable people need to be humble enough to know that they can still learn from others.

Second Reading:  Hebrews 12:18-19. 22-24

The Hebrews are informed that they are not approaching an untouchable mountain etched with gloom and fear. Rather, they have neared “the city of the living God, Jerusalem.” The Hebrews have approached a joyful gathering of angels, God our judge, and Jesus, who brought us a new covenant.

Gospel:  Luke 14:1-7-14

Jesus went to share a meal with one of the leading Pharisees when he noticed the other guests competing for places of honor at the table. He warned that a guest who takes the place of honor may be asked to move to the lowest place. Yet a guest who takes the lowest place is honored when a better position is offered by their host. He then added, “He who humbles himself will be exalted.”

            PRAY FOR PEACE

Prayer for Generosity

Dear Lord, teach me to be generous;

Teach me to serve you as you deserve;

To give and not to count the cost;

To fight and not to heed the wounds;

To toil and not to seek for rest;

To labor, and not to ask for any reward –

except that of knowing that I am doing your holy will.

                                            AMEN.

DIOCESE OF OAKLAND

2010 MISSIONARY COOPERATIVE APPEAL

The Annual Mission Cooperative Appeal - Propagation of the Faith - collection will be taken up this weekend August 28 – 29, 2010. Fr. Joseph Duong Phan from the Apostleship of the Sea will at Our Lady of Lourdes Church this weekend.

Apostleship of the Sea is the Catholic ministry to seafarers. In the Diocese of Oakland the Apostleship of the Sea reaches out to international seafarers coming to the ports of Oakland and Richmond. The chaplain and volunteers respond to the seafarers’ needs when they spend a short time at the ports, such as visiting ships and celebrating the Holy Mass and other Sacraments onboard ships. The Apostleship of the Sea also welcomes seafarers to the center for relaxing, counseling, and for connecting with their families via telephone and internet. The center also provides the transportation for them to make a quick trip to grocery stores or any shop that the seafarers need.

All these services are done with Christian charity and in the mandate of the Gospel: “When I was a stranger, you welcomed me” (Mt.25:35).

Your financial help will help us reach out to seafarers on aboard 3200 merchant vessels coming to the ports in the Oakland Diocese yearly.

Fr. Joseph Duong Phan,

Director/Chaplain, Apostleship of the Sea Oakland
