                                                    Thirty-Second Sunday

In Ordinary Time

November 8, 2009

First Reading:  I Kings 17:10-16

Elijah asked a widow for a cup of water and piece of bread. She told him she was almost out of flour, and that she and her son would soon starve. Elijah told her not to be afraid, as God had told him the jar of flour would not go empty. So she did as he had asked and prepared bread from the last of her flour. As God had said, her jar did not go empty, and she and her son had plenty to eat.

Second Reading: Hebrew 9:24-28

The high priests entered the sanctuary each year and offered sacrifice, but not a sacrifice of their own blood. Just as people die once and are judged, Christ was offered up once for the sins of many.

Gospel:  Mark 12:38-44

Jesus expressed disgust over the hypocrisy of some of the scribes for wanting special treatment from the people. He watched the wealthy put large contributions into the collection box, but explained that what they gave was surplus wealth, and not a real sacrifice. He told them the biggest donation was a small amount from a widow, because she had given up the only money she had to live on.

         PRAY FOR PEACE

Prayer for Generosity

Dear Lord, teach me to be generous;

Teach me to serve you as you deserve;

To give and not to count the cost;

To fight and not to heed the wounds;

To toil and not to seek for rest;

To labor, and not to ask for any reward –

except that of knowing that I am doing your holy will.

                                                  AMEN.

It is love that unites us in an unbreakable bond of fidelity, and fellowship with others. Jesus loved his own until the very end of his passion and death on the cross (John 13:1). ADVENT SERIES

Advent is a time to re-awaken and re-focus our lives on Jesus Christ in the midst of all the commercialism and busyness that surrounds our lives and tends to draw us away rather than into a life with the Holy Trinity.

Please join us for one hour on Mondays at 7:00 p.m. November 30, December 7, 14, and 21st in the parish hall to reflect on how much God loves us and how God continues to invite all of us each and every day into a deeper relationship.

Session I – November 30, 2009.

O come, O come Thou Wisdom From on High

  • Trinity, Incarnation, Salvation and the

Spirit of Advent.
